ANSI Sets Strategy to Secure U.S. Critical Minerals Supply Chain

The American National Standards Institute will bring together industry and government experts on September 23–24 in Washington, D.C., to synchronize U.S. standards for critical minerals. This initiative, backed by the Department of Energy, aims to bolster domestic supply chain security and solidify American influence in global trade.

The two-day hybrid workshop serves as the centerpiece of a broader effort to map the current standards landscape, identifying gaps from initial extraction to final product recovery. By consolidating research and regulatory frameworks, ANSI intends to replace fragmented industry efforts with a cohesive strategy. Organizations interested in the initiative are currently invited to provide input through an open Request for Information, which will inform the upcoming policy discussions.

Beyond the September meeting, the project includes a series of technical webinars, with the next session scheduled for June 30. These briefings are designed to align U.S. stakeholders with international protocols, managed through a newly formed coordination group focused on ISO technical committees. As global competition for minerals intensifies, these standards provide the necessary transparency and traceability for U.S. companies to maintain market access and ensure the reliability of materials essential to national defense and advanced electronics.
