The capital infusion allows Mantle to transition from a corporate project to an independent entity. By utilizing proprietary techniques to generate heat within existing formations, the company intends to facilitate both Enhanced Oil Recovery and consistent baseload electricity. James Franks, the former Director of Innovation at Hunt Innovative Technologies, steps in as CEO to lead the venture through its upcoming pilot deployments and partnership development phases.
Mantle Energy Raises $5 Million to Turn Oil Wells Into Power Plants
Dallas-based startup Mantle Energy has secured $5 million in seed funding led by 17Shoals Inc. The company, which recently spun out of Hunt Energy’s incubator, aims to repurpose dormant oil and gas reservoirs into low-carbon geothermal power sources, targeting the vast energy potential traditionally left in the ground.

Industry leaders view the technology as a bridge between traditional extraction and grid sustainability. According to Hunt Energy CEO Hunter Hunt, the approach addresses rising electricity demand by tapping into established resources in a greener, more efficient manner. With this backing, the company is now formalizing its operational plans in preparation for a future Series A funding round, aiming to prove that carbon-conscious innovation can remain commercially viable at scale.
