The approval addresses a growing concern among practitioners regarding the 'protection gap' in canine health. While leptospirosis is now considered a core vaccine by the American Animal Hospital Association due to its nationwide prevalence, data indicates that over 40% of at-risk dogs in endemic states currently lack protection against Lyme disease despite receiving other essential shots. By reducing the volume of the dose and the number of required pokes, Elanco aims to increase owner compliance and lower stress for pets during clinical visits.
Elanco Receives USDA Approval for First 1/2 mL Lyme and Lepto Vaccine
Veterinarians can now consolidate two injections into one with the USDA-approved TruCan Ultra Lyme-L4. The new vaccine, which utilizes Elanco’s proprietary PureFil technology to minimize protein-related reactions, delivers protection against both Lyme disease and leptospirosis in a single 1/2 mL dose, aiming to simplify canine wellness visits.

Dr. Jessica Pritchard of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine highlighted that the risk for these diseases persists across diverse environments, including urban and suburban settings. The vaccine has demonstrated 92.2% efficacy against natural infection in highly endemic areas, according to company data. This release follows recent regulatory clearances for other low-volume products in the TruCan Ultra line, including a bivalent canine influenza vaccine and an oral Bordetella formulation. Elanco expects the new Lyme-L4 combination to begin shipping to clinics within the next 30 days.
