Running from October 16 to 27, the festival centers on the Sunthorn Vijit Road riverfront. The culmination arrives on the evening of October 26, when boats representing each of the province’s 12 districts compete for a royal trophy. These vessels, illuminated to showcase local craftsmanship, will launch at 20-minute intervals beginning at 18.00. The schedule also includes 13 ancient-style boats designed to represent the zodiac signs, alongside a dedicated vessel for visitors to pay respects to the river.
Nakhon Phanom Prepares for Annual Mekong Illuminated Boat Procession
Floating down the Mekong River, twelve intricately crafted vessels will mark the end of Buddhist Lent this October in Nakhon Phanom. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is positioning this twelve-day celebration as a signature event, blending centuries-old spiritual traditions with a modern push to bolster the region’s night economy.

Beyond the procession, the event incorporates longboat races, traditional pha khao laeng communal meals, and performances by Isan artists. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool noted that the initiative aims to transform local heritage into a "Must-Experience" destination, encouraging travelers to extend their stays beyond major urban hubs. The festival serves as a cornerstone of the province’s cultural calendar, linking merit-making rituals and alms-giving with the broader goal of sustaining riverside community identity.
