The demonstration, scheduled for late October through early November 2026, utilizes three experimental autonomous vehicles at a specialized test track operated by the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management. Engineers will evaluate complex maneuvers including platooning, lane changes, and precise berth stopping. The project aims to refine the balance between vehicle-based autonomy and roadside support systems, moving beyond general traffic environments into purpose-built conduits.
Japan Tests Automated Logistics Lanes for Driverless Cargo Transport
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has selected Taisei Corporation, TIER IV, and Taisei Rotec to lead a demonstration project for the Autoflow Road. The initiative tests unmanned cargo transport within dedicated logistics lanes, focusing on multi-vehicle coordination and infrastructure-integrated navigation systems in tunnel environments.

Technical validation centers on TIER IV’s Pilot.Auto software and Taisei Corporation’s T-Localizer, a self-localization technology designed for environments where standard GPS fails. Taisei Rotec contributes specialized tunnel surface coatings intended to improve LiDAR perception. By simplifying sensor requirements and streamlining roadside hardware, the partners intend to establish a scalable framework for automated freight logistics that reduces reliance on complex, onboard-only computing.
