The previous volume record of 1,128,597 contracts, which had stood since March 2019, was eclipsed as investors rushed to mitigate price volatility. John Ricci, Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group, noted that market participants had positioned themselves for lower yields, making the USDA’s higher-than-anticipated ending stocks and production data a catalyst for rapid repositioning.
Corn Futures Surge to Record Volumes After Surprise USDA Data
Traders flooded the CME Group exchange on October 9, pushing corn futures to an unprecedented 1,206,376 contracts. The scramble to rebalance portfolios followed a USDA report that caught the market off guard, revealing production and yield figures that defied expectations of a subpar harvest after a difficult summer.

This surge reflects a broader trend of increased activity within the exchange's agricultural sector. During the third quarter, average daily volume for agriculture products rose 18.1% year over year to 2,022,488 contracts. Corn-specific instruments saw even sharper growth: futures volume jumped 35.2%, while corn options climbed 31.4% compared to the same period last year. September data further underscored this momentum, with total average daily volume reaching 1,936,761 contracts, a 28.8% increase over 2025 figures.
