West Coast Sourdough Sues Rival for $15 Million

A multimillion-dollar legal battle erupted in Sacramento County Superior Court as West Coast Sourdough accused a competing deli chain of orchestrating a calculated corporate raid. The lawsuit alleges that former franchisees and business insiders systematically misappropriated proprietary recipes and operational trade secrets to launch a rival brand.

The complaint, filed by WCSD, Inc. and SFB Holdings, targets Cali Rays Sourdough Deli and several individual defendants, including Gurdeep Bains and Kaldeep Uppal. West Coast Sourdough contends that the defendants did not merely rebrand their locations; they allegedly exploited confidential business systems, supplier networks, and internal layouts to build a competing operation while still under active franchise agreements.

Beyond the alleged theft of intellectual property, the filing claims the defendants leveraged inside knowledge to poach other franchisees, offering incentives to abandon their existing contracts. West Coast Sourdough reports losses exceeding $6 million in royalty and marketing revenue, pushing the total damages sought in the case to $15 million. The plaintiffs are also pursuing injunctions to halt the alleged use of their proprietary methods. With over 50 locations still in operation and 80 in development, the company maintains that no competitive pressure justifies the breach of contract or the unauthorized use of its trade identity.
