Once injected, the platform leverages ultrasound to trigger the release of the medication directly at the tumor site. According to recent research published in Pharmaceutics, this approach significantly boosts delivery to target tissues while reducing exposure in healthy organs. This is particularly relevant for checkpoint inhibitors, where patient response rates for monotherapy remain below 25% across most solid-tumor categories.
Vesselon Secures Patent for Ultrasound-Driven Drug Delivery Platform
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued Patent Number 12,714,676 to Vesselon, covering a biophysical platform that uses ultrasound-activated microbubbles to concentrate antibody drugs within tumors. This delivery method aims to bypass systemic toxicity while increasing intratumoral concentrations by sixfold compared to standard administration.

Pier Paolo Claudio, a professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, noted that the platform enhances the safety and efficacy profile of existing immunotherapies. By shifting focus from drug biochemistry to biophysical delivery, Vesselon aims to revitalize established blockbusters facing patent expiration. Each vial processed through the system contains 10 billion lipid microspheres and 50 trillion liposomes, effectively creating a new, patentable chemical entity for any drug integrated into the process.
