Hansa Biopharma marks first commercial Idefirix transplant in Australia

The milestone represents a shift for highly sensitized individuals, who often remain trapped on waiting lists due to pre-formed donor-specific antibodies. By cleaving these antibodies, Idefirix allows for successful transplantation in candidates who would otherwise be deemed incompatible with available donors. CEO Renée Aguiar-Lucander noted that the company intends to work closely with the Australian transplant community to expand the use of the enzyme therapy across both living and deceased donor programs.

Long-term outcomes for this patient and subsequent recipients will be monitored through a national registry. This real-world data collection is expected to inform future clinical understanding of the drug’s performance. While Idefirix has already seen use in parts of Europe, Israel, and Switzerland, its rollout in Australia provides a new avenue for patients struggling with high levels of HLA sensitization and the resulting risks of organ rejection.
