Kearsarge Energy Scales Battery Storage Across the Northeast

Boston-based Kearsarge Energy is set to bring 70 MWh of battery storage online this year, marking a significant expansion for the independent power producer. Having pioneered solar-plus-storage projects in the region since 2019, the firm now manages a growing portfolio aimed at stabilizing municipal grids and shaving peak demand.

Since installing its first distributed generation project in Amesbury, Massachusetts, seven years ago, Kearsarge has navigated regulatory shifts and market volatility to cement its role in regional energy infrastructure. The 2026 expansion includes four new projects, with a further 200 MWh expected to begin construction in 2027. These developments focus on public-private partnerships, often repurposing underutilized land such as former landfills and brownfield sites to house solar arrays and standalone battery systems.

Managing a total portfolio that now exceeds 104 MWh, the company serves a mix of municipal light departments and wholesale markets. Recent completions, such as the 22.4 MWh facility in Reading and the 20 MWh installation in Orleans, Vermont, demonstrate the firm’s strategy of integrating storage to manage local grid events. Andrew Bernstein, managing partner at Kearsarge, noted that the focus remains on sustainable adoption to meet escalating community energy demands while ensuring long-term affordability for public entities.
